and husband Ted a very Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary on 2nd
September

We are holding a Karaoke evening on Saturday 4 September to
celebrate the end of the various leagues. Supper will be

will be the best act and who will leave the audience with
earache!
GAZ WINS CRICKET CLUB GOLF DAY
Under pressure from younger members Haydon Morrison and Jack
Wilkins who both scored 40 stableford points and "Chicken Legs"
Richard Adams, Gary Lee won the
Annual Golf Day with a score of 41 points at Buckingham Golf
Club. A superb day was had by all 35 competitors (the highest
number ever) with the weather also being excellent. The Texas
Scramble team event was won by Tom Spurr, Darren Sirett and
Haydon Morrison in the morning. Haydon's handicap will now be
subject to a significant cut once the handicap committee meet!
LADIES WIN BRACKLEY EIGHT-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT
On Sunday 22 August Great Horwood Ladies team went to the
Brackley Invitation Eight-a-Side Tournament with high hopes of
winning the prestigious trophy. They duly won their group games
against Middleton Cheney and Deddington to top their group and
go through to the final against hosts Brackley. There were some
excellent individual performances from batters Nicola Ellison
and Debbie Armitage and bowlers Terri Hogston, Clare Armitage
and Stacey Ridgway. In a very close final Horwood Ladies scored
60 for 3 from their 10 overs, a total which Brackley set about
right from the start of their innings. With one ball left and
Brackley needing one run to win, skipper Tracey Lee bowled a dot
ball and Horwood won courtesy of losing fewer wickets.
Congratulations to the Ladies team which grows in strength every
year.
RAIN ONCE AGAIN A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE
WEEKEND'S MATCH
The 1sts game at Westbury was finished on
Saturday despite the wet weather due to the willingness of
Horwood to complete the game in adverse conditions. In a low
scoring game Great Horwood lost by 5 wickets. Unfortunately the
2nds game, which was a must win game for them, was washed out
when the heavy rain came. The 2nds now need to win at last one
of their last two games to avoid relegation. The annual 20/20
competition fell victim to the weather on Sunday as well.
EXCELLENT TREASURE HUNT WON BY
SISTERS NICOLA & TRACEY
An excellent Treasure Hunt organised by John
Goodger was won by Nicola and Tracey with help from Chloe &
Maddie. The driving test beforehand proved interesting with Neil
Wilkins and Jonboy Davey deciding that speed was of the essence
rather than avoiding penalty points thereby putting their teams
at a distinct disadvantage! Despite some attempted sabotage from
one notable team everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day which was
rounded off by a hotly contested game of Aunt Sally and Geoff's
BBQ.
Welcome to the Great Horwood Cricket Club Website
Great Horwood CC plays on an attractive, well-maintained
ground on the outskirts of the village. Situated close to the
A421, the ground is unique in that the Pavilion sits on a raised
area of ground, which offers an excellent vantage point for
watching games. The club is extremely active on both the playing
and social fronts and supports:
- Three Saturday teams that play in
the Oxfordshire Cricket Association League; Divisions 1, 5
and 11.
- The Club competes in the National
Village Cricket Competition
- A Sunday team playing friendly matches;
some Sundays the club fields two teams.
- A Wednesday team playing in the
Buckingham & District Midweek League. In 2009 this team won
the top division of this league.
- The Club runs a 20/20 Invitation
Tournament which this year will be held on Sunday 29th
August
- A Ladies team that plays friendly
matches on Sunday mornings and also runs a very successful
invitation 6-a-side competition which this year will be on
on Sunday 27th June.
- There is a thriving, rapidly growing
Youth Section, with players ranging from 8 to 15. Under 11,
12,13 & 16 teams play in local leagues including the Bucks
Cricket Board League
- Following the success of the 2009 Under
15 invitation 6-a-side competition the Club will be holding
a similar Under 16 competition this year on Sunday 13 June
- The Club is again hosting a
Buckinghamshire Youth Match which is the Under 13 team
against Herefordshire on Sunday 25th July
- The club achieved Clubmark accreditation
and ECB Focus Club status in October 2009.
The Club has a thriving social section
that organises events throughout the year; featuring a Quiz
Night, a Race Night, a Mid-Summer Party and regular B-B-Q on
Friday evenings to coincide with the 12 & Under Youth Cricket
training. The clubhouse is also used for member private
functions, using the Fully Licensed Bar Area and Kitchen
Welcome to 2010 Season from the Chairman
As
we enter the 2010 season I would, on behalf of Great Horwood
Cricket Club, like to thank all our members, officials and
sponsors for their continued support. As a village club, I
believe we are very successful and prosperous which is due
to the efforts of all those people. Thank you to you all and
to those who have placed adverts in our Fixture Book – we
are indeed very aware and grateful for your contribution to
our club.
This time last year I was looking forward to us having three
Saturday teams in the league for the first time and the fact
that we also had three youth teams in the Bucks Cricket
Board league. With the success that this was in 2009 we will
once again have three Saturday league teams. In addition,
the success of the youth section and its continued growth
has enabled us to have four youth teams playing league
cricket in 2010.
Off the field we achieved ECB Clubmark accreditation and
also ECB Focus Club status which means that we are
recognised by the sport’s governing body as a safe
environment for children to be coached, practice and play
cricket. In addition it should be a significant advantage
when we need additional funding from grant bodies for major
projects to continue to grow and serve the community.
This season the management committee will be focussing on
improving practice facilities and relieving pressure on the
square. Our first objective is to have an artificial wicket
installed by the start of the season and mobile cages to be
used for practice sessions. Another area where we will be
trying to improve is in getting major sponsors for the Club.
Linked to this is a review of the Club playing kit (i.e.
shirts, training wear). What makes the Club successful is
not just the efforts of the management committee but the
work done by and the help given by all the members and I
look forward to your continued support. With the Club being
open most nights of the week in season we are looking for
increased member support in helping on the bar – by this I
mean not just drinking but also serving! Please let any
member of the management committee know if you can help out.
Finally, I wish everyone at the Club a successful and
enjoyable season and I thank you all for your continued
support. I hope to see you all at the Club some time during
the season.
Norman Ellison
Chairman Great Horwood CC
